What are Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport?







Aging is an inevitable natural process in human life. It is associated with numerous changes in the body. However, changes in facial appearance like sagging skin and facial wrinkles are the biggest concern of all the folks going through the process of aging. While aging is unavoidable, numerous cosmetic treatments are available in the market that can diminish the signs of aging and toxins are one of them.


What are Neuromodulators

Neuromodulators, also known as neurotoxins, toxins, or tox. They are widely used in cosmetic treatment to treat a major aesthetic concern i.e. wrinkles and fine lines.


The first neuromodulator in the market used for curative treatment in medical aesthetics was “Botox”. Botox has become a popular household name for anti-wrinkle treatment in the US. However, Botox is not a treatment itself rather It is one of the brands of neuromodulators. Currently, four renowned brands of neuromodulators are available in the US namely, Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau.


How Do Neuromodulators Work:

Neuromodulators work as muscle relaxants as they restrict the muscles from contraction by blocking the nerve signal. All the neuromodulators have a common active ingredient called “Botulinum Toxin Type A”. It is responsible for inhibiting the ability of muscles to contract. However, it is a temporary effect since the muscle contraction will be restored with time. Therefore, this treatment needs to be repeated to maintain the result of the treatment.


What are the Benefits of Neuromodulators?



Neuromodulators have taken the entire beauty industry by storm due to their numerous benefits and no potential side effects. Some benefits of neuromodulators are enumerated below to mention but a few.

How Does the Treatment Look Like?

This treatment is done under the supervision of an expert provider or injector. The toxin (Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin) is injected into the area which is to be treated using a thin needle. This process takes roughly 30 minutes. This span also includes time dedicated to consultation and discussion of goals and concerns. The actual process of injection is relatively less time-consuming.



Which Areas of Face Can Be Treated by Neurotoxins?

Neurotoxins are highly effective in treating Frown lines, bunny lines, forehead lines, Glabellar lines, gummy smiles (lines that are caused due to smiling with overexposure of upper teeth), crow’s feet, and many more. You can discuss your concerns and goals with your dermatologist or esthetician.

Having said all that, it is never recommended to get injected near the orbital bone above the pupil. This can cause eyelid droop which may last several weeks and even months.


Neuromodulators Pre-Treatment Instructions

Although Neurotoxins are a safe treatment. There are a few instructions that you must follow before getting this treatment. Let’s have a closer look at it together.

  • Avoid medications and Supplements that cause blood thinning. This includes pain-killer medications such as Ibuprofen, Aspirin, and Aleve. Moreover, Herbal supplements such as Vitamin E, Garlic, and Omega 3 Capsules must be avoided to minimize bleeding and swelling at the injection site and achieve optimal results.

  • This treatment is not suitable for you if you have any type of skin allergy or infection.

  • Always consult your dermatologist or esthetician before taking this treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.


Neuromodulators Post-Treatment Instructions

  • Avoid wearing makeup on the day of treatment. Moreover, avoid touching your face unnecessarily.

  • Avoid vigorous exercise that causes sweating on the day of treatment.

  • Avoid sun and heat exposure.

  • Avoid alcohol consumption, salty food, and medications that cause thinning of the blood since they can cause

  • Don’t bend over to the waist on the day of treatment. Furthermore, avoid lying down to your head down.

  • It is also common to have bruising occur at the injected areas. Ice the area after every 10 minutes frequently.


Comparing Neurotoxins: Botox, Dysport & Xeomin

All of them have the same active ingredient i.e. Botulinum Toxin Type A and have almost similar results and address the same concern. However, the difference lies in the constitution, lasting, dosing, and timing of result onset. People often use them interchangeably to acquire the best results.

Botox

Botox is the most popular brand of Neuromodulators. One of the most important attributes that sets it apart from the rest is its use. Not only is it effective in treating fine lines and wrinkles, but it is also widely used in other medical procedures such as neck spasms and migraine. On the contrary, Dysport and Xeomin are only used in cosmetic treatment.


What is the Time of Result Onset of Botox?

The result of Botox is normally seen within 5-7 Days.

How Many Units of Botox are Required?

The recommendation from Botox® that 20 units of Botox are required to treat Glabella, 20 units for the forehead, and 24 units for both sides of the crow's feet.

Note: This is a typical number of units required to treat these areas. The dosage varies depending on your goal and concern. However, these numbers are not a hard rule but typically a guideline for your injectors. These numbers can be used as a standard to predict the dosage of Botox. A thorough consultation with your aesthetic medical provider is needed to customize the treatment to your needs.


How Often Should I Get a Botox:

If you’re having Botox as a preventative treatment, you can repeat the treatment every 4 to 6 weeks. However, if you are having Botox as a curative treatment you should have Botox after 2 months.

Dysport

Dysport is another FDA-approved, European-equivalent, and alternative treatment to Botox. It uses Botulinum Neuromodulator Type-A.


What is the Time of Result Onset of Dysport?

It usually takes 2-5 days for Dysport to show its result. Dysport takes the lowest time to show its result as compared to Botox and Xeomin.

How many Units of Dysport are Required?

The typical equivalent is 2.5 to 3.5 times the amount of Botox and Xeomin. So for a typical 20 units with be 50 to 70 units of Dysport.

How Often Should I get a Dysport?

It is recommended to get this treatment after every 4 months. With that said, this significantly depends on your metabolism and the biological response of your body to it.

Xeomin

XEOMIN® (incobotulinumtoxinA) is another alternative Botulinum Toxin Type A to Botox. It works essentially the same way as Botox.

What is the Time of Result onset of Xeomin?

Xeomin takes almost 3-5 days to show the result.

How Many Units of Xeomin are Required?

The amount of Xeomin is usually 1 to 1.5 more than Botox.

How Often Should I get Xeomin?

Xeomin has often the longest-lasting result as compared to Botox and Xeomin. However, it is recommended to repeat this treatment after every 3-6 months.

How long is the treatment?

You won't see any results on the first day, but typically you will start to see changes in 3 to 5 days. It can be as early as 24 to 48 hours. Some areas will work more than others. It takes about 10 to 14 days to see the full results, it won't get any better or worse. How long do they last?

They last about 2 to 3 months up to 4 to 5 months. Every patient is different. Can I still make expressions after a Botox treatment?

Yes! Our approach is to have you age gracefully and get that wrinkle-free expression. What happens if I ask for less than the recommended dose?

It's possible to get less dose. You risk: (1) not having the desired results and (2) not lasting as long. Is Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, and other neuromodulators safe?

Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport are all FDA-approved treatments for reversing fine lines and wrinkles. However, patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding, and have neuromuscular disorders should not receive Botox. What should I do to prepare for a Botox treatment?

A week before the treatment, avoid medications or supplements that thin the blood: Gingko Biloba, Ginseng. If you are taking prescribed blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and warfarin/coumadin, consult with your primary care provider. Although it's not a contraindication and the risk of bleeding and bruising is a little higher, we can still treat you with Botox.

Are there any side effects, complications, or adverse reactions?

Every medical treatment is without any risk. Botox and other neuromodulators are drugs, and every drug has its own side effects. Every person's anatomy is slightly different from one person to the next. Bruising and swelling can occur. A very small percentage of risk experiencing eyelid and eyebrow drooping. Other possible side effects include dry mouth, discomfort or pain at the injection site, tiredness, headache, and allergic reactions. It is possible to have an allergy to Botox, but it's extremely rare.
